Description:

Abstract:

This dataset shows the principal watersheds (drainage basins) on Pohnpei. It was derived by Maria Kottermair, University of Guam (2017). Basin boundaries were delineated through hydrological modeling using a 10-meter Digital Elevation Model (DEM) created by U.S. Geological Survey based on topography compiled in 1975. Names have not been assigned to the watersheds. Note that basin boundaries shown are modeled and, as such, reflect the DEM and not necessarily actual situation on the ground.

Purpose: To show the watersheds on Pohnpei.

The dataset is included the Digital Atlas of Micronesia, module Pohnpei, by Island Research & Education Initiative (iREi), in collaboration with Water and Environmental Research Institute of the Western Pacific (WERI) University of Guam and partial funding from United States Geological Survey (USGS), under WRRI 104-B Program, project # 2016GU302B.

1. Ran hydrologic model using ArcHydro (fill, flow direction, flow accumulation, etc) using stream definition (minimum drainage area) of 100,000 square meters; 2. Adjoined catchments further processed: a. Clipped output features with updated shoreline; b. Extracted only major watershed polygons (deleted smaller drainage basins within larger polygons); c. Merged remnant drainages (along coast) into single polygon, d. Edited polygon boundaries if neccessary to address artifacts from the model output; e. Formatted attribute table.
